This woven basket has a special story ...
On my trip to visit Blanca Lilia and the Asopafit Association, I was lovingly hosted in her home. One morning I asked if she could show me her storage room and there it was sitting alone in one corner.
She had named it "La Canoita" (the canoe) … a unique piece conceived in her mind and brought to reality as a beautifully woven and organically engineered rocking basket.
Blanca Lilia allowed me to keep this prototype and soon after, I was able to send her back detailed drawings of "La Canoita" so she could replicate her creation as a new series in the collection.
Woven by the Asopafit Association of weavers, who are creating sustainable employment within the greater community through their traditional weaving skills. The Association is led by Doña Blanca Lilia Leguizamo, whose family has been weaving traditionally for 5 generations. Her mission is to continue strengthening this art and ensure it is passed along for generations to come.
