These hand woven round placemats from Hilamos Arte are a beautiful representation of the fine quality that can be achieved with fique fiber. Their thickness and neutral tone, make them a classic addition for everyday use in the home.

Hilamos Arte is a second-generation family run workshop led by Maria Elvia Espinoza and her son Fredy Aldemar Guarín. The workshop was founded 20-years ago by Maria Elvia and is dedicated to knitting exclusively in fique fiber. Alongside her son, Fredy, they employ over 70 families – mostly women heads of households. Through this work, they can provide a sustainable and stable income for their families alongside taking care of the home.  In conversation with Fredy, he shared with me their collective love and passion for the fiber, and that it is this, and the livelihood of their community, that drives them to continue passing this artistry to future generations with such vigor.
