There are many vases out there, but there are few that are so unique and beautiful as these Cubeo vases. Handcrafted by our artisan partner Artesanías Jejenava from blue Amazonian clay, said to emanate from the legendary 'land of the Anaconda'.
Artesanías Jejenava is a small family run workshop from the Indigenous ethnic group of Cubeo, based in Colombia's Amazon basin. During my visit to the community, I had the honor of experiencing how 7-family members from three different generations bond strongly through their co-existence and co-creation of their artisanal work. Whilst the men contribute to the production chain by helping collect the blue clay, preparing the dyes and the oven to fire the pieces, the craft of ceramic making is exclusively the preserve of the Cubeo women, whose smaller and more dextrous hands, are believed to be the means by which to contribute their rich cultural legacy.
