Coopmujeres is a 35-year old cooperative of Afro-Colombian basket weavers from Guapí, Cauca on Colombia’s Pacific coast. Antonia María Cambindo, a master basket weaver with 20-years of experience, leads the cooperative, which is currently made up of 12-women. Approximately 20% of the Guapí community is currently dedicated to the art of tetera palm basketry, a fiber exclusive to the tropical forests in this region. Proceeds from their work help each family improve their health and educational conditions. For the Coopmujeres women, nature provides the resources for their work and inspires them in their daily life.
