Coopmujeres is a 35-year old cooperative of Afro-Colombian basket weavers from Guapí, Cauca in Colombia’s Pacific coast. Antonia María Cambindo, master basket weaver with 20-years of experience leads the cooperative which is currently formed by 12-women. Approximately 20% of the Guapí community is dedicated to basketry art in tetera palm, a fiber that is exclusive to the tropical forests along this region. Proceeds from their work are mainly used by each family to improve their health and educational conditions. For the Coopmujeres women, nature provides the resources for their work and inspires them in their day to day life.
