La Cesteria de Leo

Nelcy Leonor León Rincón, known as Leo … is a woman with a gentle touch. She lives in the town of Cerinza in Boyacá, where 90% of the community is dedicated to the art of basket weaving in esparto grass (halfah). At a very young age she was introduced by her mother to the art of basket weaving, and so growing up she would sit to weave alongside her parents and grandparents as part of their family tradition and cultural heritage.

It was through basketry that she saw the opportunity to improve her quality of life and that of a group of artisans from her community. Today, Leo leads a women run workshop called La Cestería de Leo, and with every woven product, these talented weavers make sure to keep their cultural tradition alive, whilst as heads of households, sustaining the wellbeing of their families.
